How do you solve the seemingly unsolvable? Ask why. Why are current approaches not fixing things? Why are we ignoring the data? Why are so many people content to accept the status quo? At RAFT, we have always believed that homelessness can indeed be solved. So, we look at the evidence from all sides, challenged our assumptions and the pieces started to fall into place. We discovered the real cause of homelessness is not lack of housing; it is broken human attachments. The solution is not shelters; it is repairing and reinforcing relationships with families, friends, schools, and communities.
My two sisters and I were never close, especially after our parents got divorced. Their split sort of split us. When my sisters and I became mothers, we realized we wanted our children to feel part of a whole family. So we started to get together with our children. At first it was holiday meals. Then birthday parties. Then summertime camping trips. Now we are all in touch all the time wherever we might be. We even have a family WhatsApp group. Instead of separateness we felt as sisters, we have forged a real attachment to each other. Through all our ups and downs, we are always there for each other. We know our children will never feel alone in this world.
