Can a single corn field in the heart of a residential area strengthen a community, bring people together, beautify a neighbourhood and help the environment? Yes!
In 2009, Together with the City of Welland, the RAFT planted a corn field in a vacant lot, formerly used as a dumpsite for construction waste. Based on a model developed by grad students at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, the process converts polluted brown fields into usable property.
Through the Phytoremediation process plants such as corn and sunflowers draw toxins from the soil and eventually create safe, clean usable soil. Crops are then used as bio-mass, an important ingredient in the production of eco-friendly bio-fuel.
Through Community Development, the Welland corn field was planted and continues to be maintained by community neighbours. It provides the community with a chance to work together and help so make the neighbourhood a better place
